Two young men were arrested by the Himachal police on July 25 in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 25-year old Israeli national. After a massive hunt, the police also seized the vehicle suspected to be used in the crime.
“Two youths who are suspected in the crime are identified as Akshay Rana and Pankaj and they hail from Kangra and Mandi districts respectively. We expected some formal arrests soon,” said Padam Singh, Superintendent of Police, Kullu.

The police said the Israeli national was slated to leave for Kaza in Lahual Spiti district around 3:30 am from Manali. To reach the bus stand, she had taken lift from some unknown persons in a private car.
“Instead of dropping her to the bus stand, the accused –whose identity was yet to be established, took her towards outskirts of Manali at Gojara, six km from the town, and gangraped her,” said Singh.
There were six persons in the vehicle. Two them alleged gangraped her, as per the victim’s statement to the police.
The police have informed the Israeli embassy about the incident.
This is the second incident of gangrape in Manali. A 30-year-old US national was gangraped in Manali three years ago, by three Nepalese youths, who had offered her lift around midnight in June 2013. All three were convicted by a local court and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the crime.
