Bar CounciI suspends 105 lawyers from Tamil Nadu

The lawyers were suspended for “regularly creating problems in administration of justice and in due discharge of the duties of the genuine practising lawyers”, said a BCI statement.

FOR THE first time ever, the Bar Council of India (BCI) Sunday suspended 105 lawyers from Tamil Nadu and prohibited them from practising in any court or tribunal.

The lawyers were suspended for “regularly creating problems in administration of justice and in due discharge of the duties of the genuine practising lawyers”, said a BCI statement. “It is because of these lawyers that the works of the court and the clients are held up and paralysed for last two months,” it said.

BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra told The Indian Express that the 105 lawyers have been suspended with immediate effect and disciplinary action will be taken against them. “It is obvious that they would create trouble during the disciplinary proceedings too as they did it earlier. So we will be conducting the proceedings outside Tamil Nadu,” said Mishra.

He said the BCI action was unprecedented.

“They (the suspected lawyers) have been disrupting court proceedings for the past 55 days. They shall not be treated as lawyers for any purpose. The High Court will be videographing all the incidents in its premises. There is a representation of lawyers to verify the identity of these lawyers from the videos before initiating action against them,” he said.

Mishra said the number of suspended lawyers could go up as charges against 84 more lawyers were being verified.
