From Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple, who is also Kannauj MP, to government officials, students, social organisations and villagers — all chipped in as Uttar Pradesh sought to enter the record books by planting 5 crore saplings in a day.
“We are planting over five crore saplings today across the state. It will be a record,” Akhilesh said as he and Dimple launched the “Green UP,Clean UP” campaign by planting saplings of Varna tree at his official residence in Lucknow.
A government spokesperson claimed that within 12 hours, 4.97 crore saplings had been planted and the target of 5 crore was achieved by the end of the day at 6,166 sites across the state.

Saplings of peepal, sheesham, sagaun, neem, arjun, imli, gular, mahua and jamun, among others, were provided by the state forest department and the evaluation was done by ‘The Energy Research Institute for Carbon Sequestration’.
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also took part in the initiative at Sugam-Jarrha forest area in Lucknow, Akhilesh also planted saplings in Kannauj and Kanpur Dehat districts. Praising the campaign, Mulayam said natural resources should be utilised properly and positive steps should be taken in this direction.
