Kabali week and Rajinikanth fans have just one wish: We just want to meet him
Kabali star Rajnikanth and his fans: All we need is for him to dedicate a month to his fans, visiting the cities and towns and villages of Tamil Nadu, so we get a photo with him, a selfie.

Of rituals attached to big-movie releases in Tamil Nadu, ‘paal abhishekam (offering of milk)’ was a novel idea thought up by Rajinikanth fans several years ago. However, this time, for Kabali’s release, they decided to cut back the pouring of milk on Rajini posters after milk dealers and milkmen in the state expressed concern at the wastage. With over 800 theatres in Tamil Nadu releasing Kabali on Friday, each theatre could have seen use of 20 to 30 litres of milk.
1 So you share the name with your favourite star…
I am an auto driver at the Coimbatore railway station. All my certificates had my original name, M Ananthan. After I became a fan of Rajinikanth some 26 years ago, I changed my name to ‘Rajini’ M Ananthan.
2 What about the charge that pouring milk on his cutouts is wastage?
I have been celebrating the release of his films since Annamalai (1992). We have been pouring milk on his cutouts and posters, like we do in temples. So there was no reason to regret. Nobody could imagine this (protest). There were days when we poured tonnes of milk. We never saw it as wastage.
3 How will you celebrate the film’s release now?
After milkmen raised the issue, all fan clubs have decided to avoid milk. Still we cannot stop those who come with milk sachets. We may use a few sachets… We will celebrate Kabali’s release with firecrackers and sweets.
4 If you ever meet Rajinikanth, what will you tell him?
He never turns up to meet us. We don’t know who prevents him from meeting his fans. We are all eagerly waiting to see him in person. We just want to meet him and take a photo. We don’t even ask him to enter politics, although we would be happy if he does. All we need is for him to dedicate a month to his fans, visiting the cities and towns and villages of Tamil Nadu, so we get a photo with him, a selfie. I speak for all the over 10 lakh fan club members in the state.

5 What makes Rajinikanth ‘special’?
His movies help us forget everything. Such an electrifying experience, isn’t it? He is a super hero on the screen, but a simple man in public appearances. He is political; we cannot forget his political dialogues. He is spiritual; a ‘sanyasi’ in his personal life who goes to the Himalayas. Show me one superstar like him.
