Pune: Mentorship cell set up at B J Medical College

The mentoring cell has been instituted with a view to maintain relations between teachers, students and their parents throughout the students’ medical education.

B J Govt Medical College (BJGMC) and Sassoon General Hospital, Pune, has launched Informal Mentorship Scheme for newly-admitted MBBS students of 2015-2016. The faculty, who are allotted students, will function as their mentors and be responsible for their welfare, progress and overall development as good doctors and responsible members of the society.

Dean of BJGMC Ajay Chandanwale said that the mentors would interact as frequently as required with the students and take appropriate steps to help and counsel them, regarding their academic performance during the first year of MBBS.

They will identify the students’ problems and help resolve them. The mentoring cell has been instituted with a view to maintain relations between teachers, students and their parents throughout the students’ medical education.

Associate Professor of Department of Biochemistry Somnath Salgar pointed out that during the first year of MBBS, the students often felt homesick, and a few of them, from rural areas, might even develop an inferiority complex.

So they would be trained in communication skills and personality development from the first day of their college life, he added. Meanwhile, Deputy Dean Arun Kowale said that scholarships had been given to meritorious students from drought-affected areas.

NGO Foundation For Excellence gave scholarships to 16 students and Mukul Madhav Foundation to 8 medical and 2 nursing students to cover their educational fees, books and mess bills.
