Linking to banks continues as no order yet from Centre, says district collector
SC hearing on December 10,PMC urges citizens to link Aadhaar numbers with bank accounts for LPG subsidy
With the Supreme Court likely to hear responses from all states to ascertain the constitutional validity of Aadhaar cards on December 10,in the city, the work to link Aadhaar with bank accounts for LPG subsidy continues.
District Collector Vikas Deshmukh on Tuesday said since there were no specific orders, the drive to link Aadhaar cards with banks for LPG consumers was on to get subsidy. With the government giving a grace period of three months till February 1,he has asked citizens to link their numbers with banks.
The subsidised nine cylinders will be given to consumers irrespective of the linkage. However, for the subsidy, the linking is essential, Deshmukh said.
With 23.58 lakh gas holders in the district, only 6.37 lakh have Aadhaar cards, and among them,2.62 lakh holders have linked the cards with banks. Of this, only 65,395 have received subsidy, the collector said.
For those who want to avail the subsidy,Aadhaar is the only way to check that the subsidy,as announced by the government for LPG cylinders,is transferred correctly to their accounts, said oil company representative Jangam.
The collector also said action would be taken against agency officials, who have been accused of not issuing Aadhaar cards to applicants.
The SC,in its interim order, had directed the government to not make Aadhaar cards and unique identification numbers mandatory to seek benefits under various social welfare schemes, including direct transfer of subsidy to consumers on LPG cylinders,as well as remittance of salaries. However,no directive was issued independently to the states.
To have entire city under Aadhaar by year-end,PMC to conduct special drive<\b>
With around 26 lakh citizens registered for Aadhaar cards, the PMC administration is now gearing up to undertake a special drive to cover the remaining 4.25 lakh citizens by year-end to achieve the status of being the first civic body to cover its entire population under Aadhaar registration.
The PMC is leading in enrollment of citizens for Aadhaar. The remaining 4.25 lakh people of the total population,as per the 2011 census data, will be covered in a special drive. I have directed the private agencies conducting the drive to relocate its centre of enrollment where there is poor response to places where there is rush for enrollment, said Anil Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner.
The idea is to reach out to citizens, who have not enrolled for Aadhaar,he said, adding that those who would benefit from the linking of Aadhaar cards to bank accounts to avail financial assistance from the government have been covered. Those who are yet to be enrolled are citizens, who do not expect any benefit from the government through its various schemes and it is up to the civic body to reach out to them, Pawar said.
He added that there were 96 centres for Aadhaar enrollment in the city, but it had to be ascertained how many were operational due to the diminishing response.
Pawar also said he was unaware of how much data of the enrolled citizens had been uploaded on the system, and he would ensure all citizens were properly enrolled for Aadhaar. The citizens are being informed through SMSes if there is any failure in uploading data,so that they enrol themselves again, he added.
The PMC is all set to use the Aadhaar system to provide financial assistance of scholarships and medical bills to citizens through Aadhaar numbers to transfer money. All the government schemes will be linked to Aadhaar to ensure that the beneficiaries received the full amount, said the civic officer.
