IVF a blessing for couples above 50

Madan Lal and Swarno Devi,both in their early 50s were busy with their 4-month-old boy on Sunday. Couples their age are usually looking for a suitable spouse for their children.

However Swarno conceived after 30 years of marriage,after her menopause through IVF. The couple came from Kangra village,invited by Dr Sumita Sofat,along with 100 more couples to celebrate 16th anniversary of her infertility treatment centre.

All couples had conceived through various infertility treatments. They had come from various states across North India. According to Dr. Sumita Sofat,Director,Sofat Infertility and Women Care Centre,“Infertility is more prevalent in our society than we think. It affects one in every six couples these days.”

With tears in their eyes,the couple said,“No doubt it looks odd to many when they see a toddler with us. But we were desperate to have our own baby and finally God heard us.”

Dharam Singh and his wife Sukhwinder Kaur from Nabha were their early 50s and had come with their 14-month-old son. Kaur also conceived through IVF 30 years after marriage.

Kaur said,“I wanted to be a mother. Adoption was not acceptable to me. My blood pressure and other problems have gone away now. I am enjoying motherhood. The glow on my face after motherhood has reduced my age. I feel active,like a 30-year-old,” she smiles.

Jagdev Kaur and Gurdeep Singh is another couple from Moga in their mid 50s. The couple were blessed with a baby girl last year. Kaur too conceived after menopause. The couple hails from Moga district. Musthtaq Ahmed and his wife Salima Begum had come from Poonch.

They had a baby 14 years after marriage while Sher Singh and his wife Sharda had been blessed with a baby 12 years after marriage.

Satpal Gosain,health minister was the chief guest and he also conducted six lucky draws. Four lucky kids were chosen as ‘Jammu Kashmir ki Shaan’,‘Himachal ki Shaan’,‘Punjab ki Shaan’ and ‘Haryana ki Shaan’ and bestowed with a prize of Rs 5,100 each. There were two bumper draws as well.

The first bumper prize of Rs 11,000 was for North India ki Shaan,a lucky kid chosen amidst those from all states. The second bumper prize of Rs 11,000 titled ‘Laadli’ was given to a lucky girl child.
