Cops to beef up security in college campus
After witnessing violence on the streets of Kolkata on Friday in the run-up to the elections in various colleges,the city police have decided to beef up the security in the campuses in consultation with college authorities.
“We will make necessary security arrangements in consultation with the college administration,” said Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti,Kolkata Police Commissioner.
While elections have been completed in St Paul’s College and Sirish Chandra College,a host of colleges will hold elections of their student body by the end of this month. These include. Scottish Church College,Jaipuria College,P C Mahalanobis College,South City College,Charu Chandra College,City College and Jaipuria College .

Three die as house catches fire in Birbhum
NALHATI: Three members of a family were charred to death when their house caught fire at Nalhati in Birbhum district on Sunday night. Police said the bodies of state government employee Purnachandra Dafadar (52),his wife Sagarika (45) and daughter Shyamali (21) were found lying in a heap after the flames were doused by firemen and locals. Parts of an LPG cylinder were also found in the kitchen,indicating that the fire may have been the result of a gas leak. The police have ruled out foul play in the prima facie probe.

Accused of theft,man beaten to death
A 40-year-old man,identified as Ismail Goni,was beaten to death by five members of a family at his Maheshtala residence on Sunday. The incident took place around 11.30 am with the entire neighbourhood watching. According to the police,the family accused the victim of stealing some valuables. Later,the family members went to his Maheshtala house in South 24-Parganas and beat him up mercilessly. Police recovered the body and sent it for postmortem. The accused persons are absconding.
