Season approaching, but CIC still a distance away

Over the last four days, the newly-constituted disciplinary committee has been flipping endless documents and testifying statements from all concerned on charges of fraud, misappropriation of funds against certain sports committee members. The committee has extended its tenure of four days and will now submit its findings only on Saturday. But irrespective of whether charges will be dismissed or upheld, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) seemed to have completely missed the point.

It’s been 11 months since Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir came out publicly against the working of the sports committee and the first condition of cricketers taking policy decisions were drafted out. It’s been seven months since the Ferozeshah Kotla pitch fiasco happened and the first promise was publicly handed out on the constitution of a Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) by DDCA president Arun Jaitley with former India skipper Bishan Singh Bedi in the lead.

However, there’s been little or no action on that front even as the time for critical decisions regarding coaches, selectors, trials, training camps and pre-season activities is fast approaching. The sports committee, meanwhile,is busy preparing for its election, and planning ahead for conducting cricket next season.

Waiting game
Former India batsman Kirti Azad, who has been vocal about the formation of CIC and had been at its forefront, says there’s little they could do except play the waiting game. “I’m not yet ready to give up on the CIC. The fact is that its the DDCA who have to do it and I have no idea why it’s getting so delayed. I’m an optimist and I believe that positive changes will happen.

“The sports committee is like Frankenstein’s monster and we must deal with it. We are always ready to serve,it’s the state for which we played and feel proud of. Our hearts bleed for the DDCA. We have checked up with the DDCA on this but every time we are told it will be done soon and it’s just a matter of some logistics. From our side we have done the work,we have submitted the blueprint of the Mumbai and Karnataka Associations on how the cricket affairs are run there. Now we can only wait,” Azad said.

Surender Khanna, who was part of the group of ex-cricketers calling for CIC,also reiterated the views. “Our president has been busy for a lot of things, including Indian cricket but I am sure it’s on his mind. It’s been a bit late and yes we are getting a bit restless on that front but I am sure that there will be a development soon,” said Khanna. He also added that cricketers often meet up and discuss issues relating to Delhi cricket. “We don’t discuss politics of cricket, only the game of cricket,” Khanna said.

The entire cluster of former India players were together on Wednesday night,at a party hosted by Chetan Chauhan that was also attended by DDCA’s top brass. Perhaps, amidst the chatter of the Indian team debacle, the CIC would have also been on the agenda.
