Burglars leave behind Rs 100 for daily needs of 78-year-old in capital
The old woman gave the burglars all her jewelleries with one simple plea — she asked them to leave her the only Rs 2,000 note she had to manage her immediate needs.
Held against her will, at knife-edge, 78-year-old Santosh Channan did not resist the burglars creeping into her home in the early hours of Thursday. Instead, she gave them all the jewelleries she had, with one simple plea — she asked them to leave her the only Rs 2,000 note she had to manage her immediate needs. Santosh handed over gold jewelleries worth Rs 2 lakh and all the cash, in change, to the masked thieves. Cash-starved due to the demonetisation scheme, Santosh pleaded to the robbers to spare some money for the sake of her daily needs. The robbers’ reaction, left the old woman flabbergasted.
On hearing the woman’s desperate plea, one of the robbers pulled out a Rs 100 note from his purse and handed it to her. “This robber had a handkerchief on his face. He gave me a hug and told me to use the Rs 100 note for my expenses. He said, ‘Aap to mere maa jaise ho’ (You’re are like my mother). And adviced me not to scream when they leave,” Santosh informed The Indian Express.
Stunned, Santosh hushed a quick advise to the robber, “I told them: ‘May God grant you some sense’.” Once they left, she called up her relatives, who live in the basement of the same building. However, she maintained her quiet and avoided calling the police until morning.
“I didn’t want to take any chance, so I called the police later Thursday morning,” said Santosh, mother of an ex-serviceman. Describing the incident further, the old woman explained that she was in the bathroom when she heard a noise. Stepping out, she found four people standing in front of her, ready to ambush. “One of them held my mouth, while another pulled out his knife. I told them about my breathing problem and requested them to not get violent,” she said.
Confirming the incident, DCP (southeast) Romil Baniya said a case under section 392(robbery) at the CR Park Police Station. Police said the robbers used ‘industrial cutters’ to gain entry. “The robbers gained entry through the drawing room. First, they broke the glass windows, unlocked one of the doors from inside, cut through the wire mesh and
finally barged in,” said a police officer.
A senior police officer said, “Forensics were called in and we have gathered evidence. A major problem is that there is no CCTV camera. Hence, we are gathering local intelligence.”
