For the past few days, an old-age home in southeast Delhi has been playing host to Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson and his wife. After living in the US for the last four decades, Kanubhai Ramdas Gandhi and his wife Dr Shiva Laxmi Gandhi decided to come and live at the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram.

G P Bhagat, founder of the ashram, said the couple contacted him two years ago after the ashram was profiled in a prominent Hindi news channel. “They called me and expressed their desire to stay at the ashram. In the first week of May, a woman from Gujarat came to check the place and inquired if the couple could stay here. They arrived on May 8.”

The ashram, located in a narrow street in Mohan Estate, is home to 130 elderly men and women. Bhagat says most of those living at the ashram come from “wealthy family” backgrounds. “The couple told me that the work being done at the ashram is what Mahatma Gandhi had envisaged. I guess that is why they wanted to stay here,” said Bhagat.

He added that the couple had faced some problems. “I heard they were mugged in Gujarat. This could be a reason why the decided to come live in Delhi,” said Bhagat.

When The Indian Express tried to speak to the couple, 87-year-old Kanubhai Gandhi said he preferred to pose for a picture instead. Bhagat said the couple seemed tired as many people, including political leaders, had been visiting the ashram to meet them in the last three days. “Kanubhai looks tired. They don’t want to go undergo a medical check up either and have refused to see a doctor,” said Bhagat.

Kanubhai previously worked at NASA while his wife was a biomedicine researcher.
