Delhi Underground: ‘Waste of resources’

Officials in the civic corporations see the recent announcement of setting up mohalla clinics in the capital as a “waste of resources”.

FRIENDSHIP-DAY7‘Waste of resources’

Officials in the civic corporations see the recent announcement of setting up mohalla clinics in the capital as a “waste of resources”. The argument being that dispensaries already exist at the district level and renaming some of them as “mohalla clinics” will not change their purpose. The mohalla committees of the civic corporations are also similar to the government’s mohalla sabhas in their composition and functioning, the officials point out. A senior official remarked, “This government is not interested in strengthening existing structures, it is only interested in raising parallel bodies.”

Pulling a prank

Recently, posts on social networking sites congratulated Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on being “elected the Delhi BJP president”. Party sources said the posts were uploaded by mischief-mongers as elections for the post of Delhi BJP president are likely to be held in November. Lobbying for the post has already started, they point out. “People who don’t want Dr Harsh Vardhan elected again as the Delhi BJP chief could be behind the prank,” a party leader said.

Flash mob

Nail polish delays surgery

Before a surgery at a Central government hospital last week, a senior resident doctor reported at the operation theatre without removing her nail polish. The doctor in question is in the second year of her residency. “As a rule, long nails are not encouraged in our operation theatres and nail paint is a strict no-no. The doctor had forgotten to remove the nail polish, hurriedly tried to scrub it off and reported for the surgery. The surgery was delayed by a few minutes as the doctor had to trim her nails and remove the paint before reporting at the operation theatre,” a source said.

Angry Metro commuters

After Metro services on the Yellow Line were affected last week because of a glitch, many commuters took to social media sites to express their anger. One commuter, for instance, said, “Escaped by cab. Pathetic #DMRC keeping commuters in dark. #delhimetro,” while others claimed hapless people were stranded outside stations, waiting for cabs or auto-rickshaws.

Police refused to give the exact number of people who were injured in the recent violence at Khajuri Khas. Officials at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital said four-five persons came to the hospital with injuries. Residents of the area claimed at least 10 people were injured. But senior police officers refused to give exact figures. Asked repeatedly, one officer finally said, “Yes, there are a few injuries. But not many. Something in between.”

No ‘fast unto death’ for now

In the ongoing hunger strike by district court lawyers over the pecuniary jurisdiction Bill, lawyers last week declared a fast-unto-death. Last Thursday, with uncertainty over functioning of the Lok Sabha, a huge banner mentioning the dates of the fast-unto-death were erased.

Not happy with probe

Unhappy with the investigation by the local police in a kidnapping case, a woman, along with her sister, approached a senior police officer at the Police Headquarters. The police officer immediately called the investigating officer on his cellphone, telling him how to go about the case.
