BE CAREFUL while stepping on the gas in Chandigarh even if you don’t notice any checkpost or policeman on the road as the Chandigarh Traffic Police is now gearing up to tighten the noose around speeding vehicles with speed gun cameras enabled with night vision.
The traffic police on Thursday tested the cameras by installing them temporarily on Madhya Marg. Along with the cameras, a screen, mentioning the speed of vehicles, was also set up near the Railway Light Point.
Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, Rajiv Ambasta, DSP Traffic, said, “A team of experts gave us a demo of the camera and the screen today. The cameras have night vision as well while the screen shows the speed of the vehicle on the road.”
The DSP added, “The equipment were tested and later brought down in the evening. The setting up of such cameras is in the pipeline of Chandigarh Police and a meeting with senior officials will be held regarding this. After the meeting, it will be finalised where and what type of cameras will be set up.”
Ambasta further stated that the Chandigarh Traffic Police aims to scale down the number of accidents in the city and with the help of such cameras, transparency in curbing accidents would be helpful.
Talking about the cameras and the screen which can be set up in the city in the coming months, the DSP said, “The traffic police are planning to set up cameras with night vision which will capture the image of the speeding vehicle in seconds and send that to the official concerned. If there is a violation of speed, then a TVIS challan can be sent through the image to the violator. The testing of camera was done to see from how far it can click the image of the violating vehicle and how clear is the image.”
The cameras can click the image of the speeding vehicle even in heavy rain, dense fog and at night. Meanwhile, the setting up of the speedometer screen is not fixed, but it can be helpful for riders to see the speed of their vehicle. If the speed is above the permissible limit, then a white light will blink on the screen to alert the driver about the speed, the DSP informed.
