Chandigarh fest of letters at PU from today

The Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi — in collaboration with the Panjab University — is organising “Chandigarh Festival of Letters 2011” at the campus from January 28.

The Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi (CSA) — in collaboration with the Panjab University — is organising “Chandigarh Festival of Letters 2011” at the campus from January 28. The three-day festival will be inaugurated on January 28 at 10 am in the English auditorium. Dr Karan Singh,Rajya Sabha MP and President,ICCR,will deliver the inaugural address. Prof Manju Jaidka,the chairperson of the Akademi,said the three-day festival is a mix of paper presentations,lectures,readings and discussions with a quiz contest. There will be a felicitation ceremony and awards will be conferred on select authors.

Post-festival,the CSA will also celebrate the birth centenary of Faiz Ahmed Faiz,where scholars and poets will lecture,read and recite from the poet’s work,said Jaidka.

International air law moot court competition on January 29

The department of Laws and University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) — in collaboration with Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation — is organising the national rounds of “Second Leiden — Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition” at the Moot Court Hall of the Department of Laws,Panjab University campus,on Saturday,January 29.

Justice GS Singhvi,judge of the Supreme Court,will inaugurate the function at 10 am and deliver the inaugural address.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi,Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court,will preside over the inaugural function. Justice Markandey Katju,judge of the Supreme Court,will deliver the valedictory address at 4 pm,said Prof Nishtha Jaswal,Chairperson,Department of Laws.

Time to translate Granth Sahib into foreign languages,says Tiwana

Eminent writer,Sahitya Akademi and Saraswati award winner Dr Dilip Kaur Tiwana addressed research scholars of the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies on the Panjab University campus on Thursday and gave an informal talk on “Guru Granth Sahib — The Eternal Truth”.

Focusing on the relevance of teachings of Guru Granth Sahib in the era of globalisation,she emphasised that the SGPC should undertake the task of translating it in all foreign languages.

She said her new novel “Bichhre sabhho varo vari” is based on the life of Mata Sundri,wife of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is a follow-up to her previous novels “Teen Lok Se Nayari” (based on Mata Jeetan) and “Tumri Katha Kahi Na Jaye” (based on Mata Sahib Kaur).

The last part of her autobiography “Turdean Turdean” will be released very soon,she said. The centre chairperson,Dr Jaspal Kaur Kaang,presented her new book “Bani Rahas” and a memento to Tiwana.

Court issues notice to PU Registrar,V-C over committees

A lower court of Chandigarh issued notices to R C Sobti,Vice-Chancellor and A K Bhandari,Registrar,Panjab University Thursday over a petition filed by advocate Arvind Thakur.

The lawyer has sought directions to restrain the two from constituting committees to resolve certain issues and demanded that the existing committees be dissolved. The court has issued notices to the two to respond to the contentions raised by the petitioner.
