Yemens embattled President,Ali Abdullah Saleh,agreed Saturday to a proposal by Gulf Arab mediators to step down within 30 days and hand power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution,an about-face for the autocratic leader.
The protest movement demanding Salehs immediate departure said Saturday that it also accepted the latest draft of the deal but with reservations.
State TV reported that Yemen’s foreign minister delivered the governments acceptance to mediators on Saturday.
The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council,which includes powerful Saudi Arabia,has been seeking to broker an end to the crisis in the fragile and impoverished nation on the southern edge of the Arabian peninsula.
