The bodies of the girls were recovered on June 25 from the Western Yamuna Canal near Barwasni village in the district. The two were strangulated by their grandmother and two uncles. Both the victims were residents of Kot Mohalla in Sonepat.

Police said that according to the accused, the girls had developed illicit relations with Vijay,Chanchals step-brother. Vijay had been staying with Vidya Devi for the past one month.

Police believe that the accused had killed the girls to save the honour of the family after their alleged affair came to light. The three took the girls in a car on June 25 on the pretext of taking them to the house of Manoj, father of Raj Kumari,in Dewru village here. However, they strangulated the girls to death and threw their bodies in the canal. The bodies got stuck on the canals embankment and were noticed by some residents, who informed the police.

The three arrested on Saturday, girls grandmother Vidya Devi and uncles Suraj and Chand, were produced before the Sonepat duty magistrate on Sunday. They were remanded to 14 days judicial custody. Police claimed that the three had confessed to the crime. The girls were strangulated as per the postmortem report, said a senior police officer.
