Room for art

If you’ve got an idea, they’ve got the space

Creativity needs a canvas and freedom, from constraints of place, space money, time et al! Artists need an occasion to spread their wings, get appreciation and an applause. It’s a lack of space that restricts many to showcase their talent, for galleries and halls come at a price, one that’s really out of bounds for many and an issue that not just young and upcoming artists grapple with. “You want to flaunt your art,get a feedback, know where you stand and feel the people’s pulse. But where to do you do all this?,’’ asks Nitin Sahni,a young painter and pass-out of the Government College of Art,who also has a keen interest in caricature. “We’ve been asking the Administration to give us some space for artistic activities for many years now,we’re waiting,’’ agrees Diwan Manna,Chairman of the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi.

Well, here’s some reason for cheer, that comes from young entrepreneurs who’re mixing business with artistic endeavours without looking for huge gains. At the all-new Cafe Nomad in Sector 7,Priya Jagat has reserved two shelves,a platform for young artists to display their art, artefacts, photographs. “This was well-thought of while designing the restaurant and is of course, free of any charge. We thought it would be great idea for people to not just enjoy a great meal, but also appreciate a work of art,’’ Priya hopes to have people exhibit for at least a week and also interact with guests about their work. “We will give them support in terms of infrastructure and rest can be done according to the work and the artist’s profile,’’ she adds.

The little park at Lala Lajpat Rai Bhavan buzzes with activity every Sunday,as members of Cafe Kaffee Kuchh discover the sublime art of hanging out get together, which according to Sukhmani Kohli, the founder of this makeshift outdoor cafe,“is an art.’’ The Cafe celebrated a year of togetherness a few days back and the idea of a community space where people can come and offer workshops, share their ideas and skills, watch films together, display their art, have poetry reading sessions has worked out really well. The idea is to open space for people to make food together, serve it voluntarily, talk about issues, spend time without an agenda, the idea being to open themselves to more!

All set to launch a cozy cafe soon at Kids’ Own in Sector 17,Tarun Sibal’s not only busy with food and ambience, one for activities that will help people share their good work with others. Tarun’s keen to have NGOs,artists, photographers to share their work with the public here, especially those working for a good cause. “Art and artefacts made by less privileged children, items out of waste, there is so much good work happening around and we would love to be part of the change, however little,’’ smiles Tarun. Exactly what Rajshree Sarda has in mind,as she gives finishing touches to her all new Spiritua-All a quaint space in her home in Sector 7,where she hopes to have yoga sessions, artistic meets, theatre activity, exhibits at al,“money is not the consideration. The expression is,’’ says Sarda. Gitanjali Gill who’s associated with the Nabha Foundation has an amphitheatre at her farmhouse Gulistan at Zirakpur, which she hopes theatre people, musicians, craftsmen…would use to promote their art. In fact, the young lady built it precisely to share her love for art,“it’s got changing rooms, washrooms, lots of space and I would be only too happy to give it free of cost.’’ Got a plan?
