University,UT plan strict action against organisations that deface highways
To put a check on the rampant menace of defacement by student organisations of walls,sign boards and even highways by putting up posters,the university authorities along with UT Administration is all set to take legal action against the defaulters.
Taking a strong note of the students posters found on the Ambala-Chandigarh,Zirakpur-Patiala and other adjoining highways,authorities have decided to take strict action that includes an FIR against these student leaders.
The student organisations have been given 24-hour notice to get it removed.
The issue was brought up by the National Highway Authority of India and the UT Administration has forwarded the communication to Panjab University.
We have categorically informed all the student leaders to remove all the posters that are put up on the places other than permissible by the authorities within 24 hours. This instruction does not limit to the university students but also to all the students organisations in the colleges, said Chandigarh Additional Deputy Commissioner M L Sharma.
Sharma warned the student leaders during a meeting on student-related issues pertaining to elections and ragging on Wednesday. Similar views were expressed by the university authorities prsent in the meeting including Dean Students Welfare Naval Kishore.
The students have been clearly warned that strict legal action warranted by the law that can also include an FIR will be taken against the defacement, Sharma told Newsline.
Student organisations said they have been warned about it and have directed their leaders in various colleges to remove the posters.
We have communicated to all our party leaders in various colleges to remove their posters from places other than allowed by the authorities. This would be taken care of in the coming days, Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) president Vikramjeet Singh,who was had attended the meeting,said.
Even months before the student elections,these posters have come up at almost all the places,not only on the university and college campuses but also markets,roads,highways,electric poles and wherever the students could find a place.
Despite several places within the campus earmarked for display of posters,students hardly followed the guidelines.
