Prosecutor in Shopian case fired

Almost four months after the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) filed a chargesheet in the Shopian case against 13 people six doctors,five lawyers and two civilians for allegedly fabricating evidence and misleading people,the state government has terminated the services of the public prosecutor in the case,Sheikh Mubarak,who was one of the accused in the chargesheet filed by the CBI in the High Court on December 15 last year.

The CBI had informed the High Court,which is monitoring the Shopian case,that 22-year-old Neelofar and 17-year-old Asiya,who were alleged to have been raped and murdered,had died due to drowning in May last year.

We have terminated the services of public prosecutor Sheikh Mubarak as per rules, said J-K Law Secretary Ghulam Hassan Tantary.

Government sources said action against Mubarak was taken according to the CBI investigation. Mubarak was the public prosecutor in the case in the Shopian Sessions court and he took over the case from Mushtaq Ahmad Gatoo as the public prosecutor.

The government lawyer was accused by the CBI of inducing,assaulting and threatening the witnesses to make false statements to implicate police and security forces in a false case of rape and murder of the two women.
