Modi’s role in ’02 riots: probe panel adjourns hearing

The Nanavati-Mehta Commission on Monday adjourned the hearing on the application demanding to summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others to examine their role in the 2002 statewide riots.

The Nanavati-Mehta Commission on Monday adjourned the hearing on the application demanding to summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others to examine their role in the 2002 statewide riots.

The Commission will now hold the hearing on July 10 and 11,as the Advocate General, who was scheduled to appear before it today, did not come.

Last month, the counsel for the state government,Tehmtan Nanavati, had demanded adjournment on the application, saying the Advocate General would appear before the Commission to represent the case of the government.

But when the proceedings began today, the government sought adjournment as they wanted to file written submissions before the Commission and needed time for the same. Granting the adjournment, the Commission said that now onwards no adjournment would be granted and the hearing would take place on the two consecutive days.

Mukul Sinha from Jan Sangharsh Manch has filed the application demanding to summon Modi, his former Cabinet colleagues and office staff of 2002 and a senior IPS officer. Sinha today submitted more documents in support of his application.

Sinha told Newsline,“Earlier, the government had demanded adjournment saying the Advocate General is to appear on June 22. Now,they sought the adjournment to give their reply through written submissions. It is not clear if the AG will appear on July 10 or not.”
