Left’s bandh call total failure in Nandigram

The bandh called by the Left Front’s unit in East Midnapore failed to create any impact in Nandigram on Monday.

The bandh called by the Left Front’s unit in East Midnapore failed to create any impact in Nandigram on Monday. The 12-hour bandh was called to protest against the killing of two CPM activists in Nandigram on Saturday.P K Ghosh, district police chief of East Midnapore, said though shops and offices remained closed and public transport was paralysed the bandh passed off peacefully.

Two CPM activists were lynched on Saturday evening at Jadubarichawk and later the police recovered the bodies from a canal. Ashoke Guria, district committee member of CPM,alleged that the police failed to arrest the Trinamool activists who were allegedly involved in the killing.

Guria admitted that the shops were open in Nandigram and the bandh did not have any impact there. The Trinamool Congress openly opposed the bandh and Nandigram is under its control, said Guria. Criticising the role of the police Guria said the Trinamool activists attacked the houses of CPM supporters at Jadubarichwk in the morning. They ransacked seven houses and set them on fire. Police were present a kilometer away but they remained a mute spectator,Guria added.

The district police chief, however, said there was no such incident in Jadubarichwk. Police were patrolling the sensitive areas in Nandigram on Monday.
