JK govt wants to know state losses because of IWT

J-K govt has appointed a consultant to quantify the exact losses suffered by the state on account of Indo-Pak Indus Water Treaty.

Jammu and Kashmir government has appointed a consultant to quantify the exact losses suffered by the state on account of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan to pursue its demand for compensation.

“We have engaged a consultant to quantify the actual losses suffered on account of IWT,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah told reporters here.

He said the intention of the Centre to compensate the state for the losses due to IWT cannot be doubted as the state so far had not been able to project a figure.

“We never had a figure which has ranged from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 80,000 crore. The truth may be in between,” Omar said.

The Chief Minister said once the consultant submits the report on the losses suffered by the state, the government will take the matter up with the Centre.

Asked about the refusal to hand over Salal power project to the state as recommended by the Prime Minister’s working group headed by C Rangarajan,Omar said the state was not happy about it.

“All power projects should be returned to the state after the lease has expired and the investments (made by NHPC) recovered with some profits,” he said.

On hydro electric potential in the state, the Chief Minister said the 20,000 MW generation capacity was based on detailed project reports carried out on the rivers and other water basins.

“In fact, given the modern technology and the gadgets available today, the actual potential might be higher as has been proved in the Rattle Power project. We are going to get 60 to 70 MW more than estimated earlier,” he said.
