As the build up to the Panjab Universitys students council elections hots up,the Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) is emerging as a coveted alliance partner.
The Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) have reportedly approached the INSO offering to contest the elections jointly.
Aware of its dominant position,INSO is learnt to have insisted that irrespective of their alliance partner, their candidate Deepika will be fielded for the presidents post.
Talking to Newsline,Deepika said,We are ready for an alliance and it doesnt matter whether SOPU or PUSU becomes our partner. We are in a strong position and if the alliance does not work in our favour,we may stand as an independent party.
SOPU and PUSU both are reported to have offered three seats each to INSO. These include the posts of vice-president,secretary and general secretary.
Experts with the student elections at PU predict a clean sweep for an INSO-SOPU combine, while also not ruling out a tough contest if INSO decides to join hands with PUSU.
INSOs hold over the Himachali community in the university seems have become stronger with its presidential candidate,Deepika, hailing from the region.
The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP),meanwhile, appears to be losing ground this year. Even as their chances of pulling off an independent victory appear slim, they however expect their loyal vote bank to support them. Keeping a low profile this year is the National Students Union of India (NSUI) that is yet to declare its final set of contestants.
