Nooruddin,a Class VI student of Millatnagar School, who is battling renal failure, has been spending a fortune to reach his make-shift school near Kankaria everyday from his home in Millatnagar for the last 18 months.

The school at Millatnagar had over 2,000 students. But now the number stands below 1,000 as several have dropped out. The parents either cannot afford transportation or fear the safety of the children. Several requests for early completion of the building has fallen on deaf years, and this has had a severe impact on the quality of the education as half of the time, the children’s attention is diverted to the road as they are made to sit in the verandah. The Gunotsav exercise started on Tuesday may reflect badly on the school’s performance and the AMC may have to accept its share of responsibility for the poor standard of education, according to a parent. The school staff say the outcome of the Gunotsav exercise may not reflect a true picture of the children’s abilities. A staff member said on condition of anonymity,“The AMC is simply not issuing tenders for fitting the doors and windows in the new building in Millatnagar.”

On his part,AMC school board administrative officer Dr L D Desai said that no student has faced any hardship because the alternative schools were at a “walking distance”. He said that only plaster and light fittings were to be done. “I hope that we will get the possession in a fortnight or so,” he added.
