Govt may probe alleged dumping of bicycle parts from China

Manufacturers complained that their business has been hit as over 80% of the items are being imported at cheap prices from Chinese cos.

The government is likely to probe alleged dumping of bicycle parts into the country from China following a representation from the industry,an official said.

Local manufacturers of bicycle parts have complained that their business has been hit severely as over 80 per cent of the items are being imported at cheap or “dumped” prices from Chinese companies.

“Industry representatives have informed us that import of Chinese parts has damaged their business and they now want the Commerce Department for an anti-dumping probe,” an official said.

The Department has analysed the manufacturers’ complaints.

“You might see investigation by the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping,” official in the Commerce Ministry said.

A Ludhiana-based bicycle parts manufacturer Rajat Bhatia said,”As of now the products from China has hit our sales by about 30-35 per cent”.

He said local manufacturers face tough competition as leading cycle brands import most of their requirements from China.

According to the estimates,the size of bicycle and its parts industry is about Rs 3,000 crore. Imports of bicycle and its parts from China are worth Rs 1,300 crore annually.
