Aundh,one of the localities of the city growing very fast,is a convenient residential area for IT professionals working mainly at Hinjewadi. Unfortunately,its also an area prone to theft. House break-ins and vehicle thefts are most commonly reported. Even a bank robbery and theft of sandalwood have taken place.
Many working professionals,single or couples,living in the big residential complexes of Aundh lock their houses to attend office. Thieves gather information about such locked flats as they can rob them without encountering resistance.
Last week,the crime branch of Pune police arrested a gang of five Nepal nationals,working as guards in Pimpri area,who committed thefts in Aundh and Pashan areas. The suspects committed thefts at Anand Park in Aundh and Abhimanshri Society in Pashan. Investigations reveal they collected information about locked flats in Aundh and Pashan from their friends working as watchmen in the residential societies in these areas, said police inspector Arun Walture of crime branch.
Theft of valuables and accessories from cars parked in the area is also a commonly reported offence,mainly in market areas. Thefts from shops are also significant in Aundh.
On Tuesday,police arrested an 11-member gang suspected to have stolen 63 mobile phones worth Rs 2.6 lakh from a shop at Darpan Apartment in Aundh.
Police have urged office bearers of residential societies and commercial complexes to take steps like installing good quality CCTV cameras at strategic locations and deploying security young and active security guards.
In June 2008,a gang of armed men had looted Rs 9.7 lakh from the Punjab National Bank Aundh branch in broad daylight. Three persons arrested in the case were sentenced to three-year rigorous imprisonment by the sessions court this month.
In July 2009,Rs 1.47 lakh was stolen from the Aundh post office. The crime branch of Pune police arrested two persons in October 2010 in connection with the theft.
In January last year,a gang of nine members that stole sandalwood trees from Aundh and Baner areas was busted.
