School : Decision today on online admission

From this year, students seeking admission to Class XI may be able to carry out the whole exercise of getting and submitting forms and checking the merit list online,as their counterparts in Mumbai would do.

With most colleges in the city ready to accept the online format, education department officials are meeting on Tuesday to take a decision.

Deputy education director,Pune division,G K Mhamane said,“Mumbai will adopt the online admission process, but no decision has been taken for Pune yet.” He added there was no official communication from the government to begin the admission process online. With less than a month for the admission process to begin, government officials are noncommittal whether they would be ready to implement the online admission process if the state government gives its nod.

The state government had decided that the admissions procedure for Class 11 would henceforth be conducted online in Mumbai.

The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) is providing the technical assistance in Mumbai. The MKCL is ready to implement it in Pune if the state government gives the green signal.

According to sources, the MKCL had forwarded a proposal to the deputy director of the education department of Pune division four months back to make the admission process of Class XI online in Pune. “We did not get any response from the office in Pune,” said an MKCL officer.

In Pune, the admission process for Class 11 has been centralised for the last 15 years and is mostly hassle-free. In an informal meeting of college principals and education officers last week, the online format was discussed.

“The online process will help students get everything at a click and they will not have to rush to colleges to check the merit list,” said Ravindra Pardeshi, principal of Fergusson College.

However,vice-principal of another college, said,“The idea is good. But it should be implemented on an experimental basis first to avoid any chaos.”

The examination will begin at 10 am with a 50-mark Paper I of physics-chemistry that will go on till 11.30 am. After a break of 10 minutes,Paper II,biology (50 marks),will follow from noon to 1.30 pm. Paper III,mathematics (100 marks) will be held from 3 pm to 4.30 pm.
