Crorepatis,tainted candidates form a chunk

In the 14 constituencies,which will go to polls on May 13,40 out of the 203 candidates have criminal records. Samajwadi Party tops the list of major parties with fielding eight such candidates,followed by BJP with six,BSP with four and the Congress with three. In all,it constitutes 19.7 per cent of the total number of candidates in fray.

According to the affidavits filed by candidates and compiled by Association for Democratic Reforms,19 out of the 40 candidates have been charged with heinous crimes like murder,attempt to murder,theft and extortion.

Here too,SP takes the lead with five,BSP and Congress are second with two candidates each and BJP has one candidate charged with such crimes. The final phase has nine Red Alert Constituencies where three or more candidates have criminal cases against them.

Among these,the top three constituencies are Amroha with five candidates,followed by Aonla and Bareilly with four.

This phase will also see crorepatis vying for that coveted seat in the Parliament. The Congress has 12 crorepati candidates,followed by BJP and BSP with eight and SP with six. In all,24.7 per cent of candidates contesting in final phase are crorepatis.

Interestingly,with so many rich candidates in fray,only 80 out of the 203 have furnished their PAN card details.

The average asset per candidate for Congress is Rs 55 crore,for BSP it’s Rs 5 crore,BJP with Rs 4 crore and SP with Rs 3 crore.

Gender bias also makes its presence felt as only 15 women (7.4 per cent) have been fielded against 188 men. On the education front too,only 41.9 per cent or 85 candidates are graduates or have higher degrees.
