His readiness to experiment helped Amitabh Bachchan sing in a variety of music genres for Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap

Mr Bachchan’s knowledge of music is impeccable. He knows all the ragas and is always willing to experiment with something new.” This observation by music composer Shekhar Ravjiani of Vishal-Shekhar probably explains why the veteran actor keeps returning to the microphone to lend his voice to songs for his films.

However, with Bbuddah… Hoga Tera Baap, the actor’s voice, for the first time, dominates a film’s album with four of the five tracks sung by him.

Go Meera Go is a duet with Abhishek Bachchan — a medley of four of his yesteryears hits,Haal-e-Dil is a romantic melody picturised on Hema Malini and him,and the title track of the film which has been recorded in two versions — a capella and dubstep.

Despite accolades pouring in,Bachchan remains nonchalant. “I am not a singer. It’s my directors who have the faith in me as a singer,” laughs a modest Bachchan.

Puri Jagannadh admits that along with Vishal-Shekhar,he insisted that Bachchan sing the songs. “He is as good as a professional singer and he loves to sing,” says the director of the film. And since the movie is aimed at Bachchan’s fans,Vishal Dadlani and Ravjiani were also sure from the beginning that Mr Bachchan would be the ideal choice.

It was due to the actor’s experimental nature that, during one of the recording sessions at the studio, that the a capella version of the title track was chalked out. “One of the keyboardists was not present at the studio and that’s when Mr Bachchan started to make the drum and bass sounds while we were just hanging out and thinking of an alternative. We were impressed and decided to go ahead with it,” Ravjiani reminisces. Bachchan on his part had heard of the genre, but never explored it further. “I first made sounds of a guitar, then drums and then a few other instruments. Vishal-Shekhar then processed each sound with a software, took it to the desired pitch, and eventually, put it all together,” says Bachchan.

But Bachchan’s favourite song is the romantic melody Haal-e-Dil. “It is very soothing to the ears and I just love the way it’s been composed,” he says. The medley with Abhishek combines the songs Rang Barse from Silsila,Saara Zamaana from Yaraana,Pag Ghungroo from Namak Halal and Khaike Paan Benareswala from Don. Bachchan, while reminiscing about the songs, insists that it is technology that has made singing an easy job for “non-singers” like him. He remembers the days when an entire song was recorded with a complete orchestra in a large studio, and the song would have to be redone even if a single musician made a small mistake. “Now,musicians and singers have strong support system in the form of software that can change a singer’s scale and correct the pitch as well. Moreover, voices of non-singers like me also can be enhanced.”
