In yet another case of vehicle theft reported at the Panjab University campus today,a motorcycle belonging to Manjit Virk,a student of the Zoology department, was stolen. Manjit, who stays in the boys’ hostel Number 6,said he had parked the bike in the parking lot of the hostel last night.

This is the eighth such case of theft in the last two months on the Panjab University campus. Thefts have been reported from places like AC Joshi Library and departments near the V-C office. In another incident, cash kept in a scooty parked at the Department of Laws was stolen.

The Panjab University Student Union (PUSU),meanwhile, has raised questions about the security system of the varsity. PUSU president Udey Singh Wirring said,“According to the information provided on the university website, expenditure estimates incurred by the PU authorities on security is around Rs 73,50,000 for the current fiscal year. What is the use of spending such huge amounts of money on security?”

PUSU chief patron Simranjit Singh Dhillon said,“The issue of lapses in the security system on the campus is not new. It seems the authorities are not concerned about safety issues.”
