Alleging that his party colleague Azam Khan had issued threatening statements,Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Tuesday approached the Election Commission demanding action against him.

The SP general secretary,in a letter to Election Commissioner V S Sampath, said while addressing a rally in Rampur,Khan, who is an MLA from there, gave an allegedly provocative statement that “certain people who have taken money and who don’t believe (in supporting Khan) should not be able to come out of their homes on May 13 (the polling day)”.

The SP leader also attached with the letter a copy of a newspaper article carrying the statement.

Singh claimed that the statements made by Khan violated Section 171-C of the IPC which deals with undue influence during elections.

“It is in the fitness of the things that immediate action be taken against Khan for seeking to threaten voters and the candidate in the ongoing polls,” he said.

Later speaking to mediapersons outside EC office, the SP leader alleged that “Khan has openly made a threatening statement. He has attacked Jaya Prada (party candidate from Rampur parliamentary seat) and also our leader Au Azmi earlier. He wants polarisation of Hindu and Muslim votes in Rampur”.

Singh added that he has asked the EC to keep Khan in custody till the election process is over.
