The Meerut jail authorities were caught napping when seven murder convicts undergoing life imprisonment and two undertrials escaped undetected on Monday night by scaling the double boundary wall with the help of an improvised ladder, which they made with two iron pipes, iron rods and metal wire.

The jail authorities got to know about it only when they found nine inmates of 13-A barrack missing during the routine headcount in the morning.

The authorities suspended Jail Superintendent R N Upadhyay, the jailer who was in charge during the night, and 10 warders for negligence of duty, and ordered an inquiry.

Prisons IG V K Gupta said they could not immediately establish how the inmates got the material to make the ladder. We are looking into it, Gupta said.
