The team acted on a tip off that a gang of drug dealers from Jammu and Kashmir were smuggling charas into Mumbai using CNG cylinders. Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC) Sunil Paraskar said,Over the past few months,we were aware of a gang smuggling narcotics in vehicles but had didnt know how they managed to evade all check posts. On January 11,we received a tip off that a Maruti Swift was bringing in drugs and the contraband was stashed in a CNG cylinder in the car.
A trap was laid and the vehicle was intercepted at Bandra Kurla Complex. The driver,Nitin Chikne (22),was arrested. After Chiknes interrogation a Quallis with drugs was seized on Wednesday.
We have seized 6.5 kg narcotics worth Rs 5,20,000. Chikne was produced in court and remanded in police custody till January 18. Initial investigations have revealed that the drugs were being brought from Jammu and Kashmir, said Paraskar.
Chikne is a native of Satara but had been residing at Antop Hill for the past few years.
Chikne had gone to Ajmer a few months ago and had met the Kashmiri traffickers at a dhaba. On learning that he was a driver, they lured him into smuggling drugs. Apparently he was paid Rs 20,000 and other expenses for petrol and food for every run that he made, added Paraskar.
