Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan will be the Trinamool Congress’s candidate from West Bengal’s Berhampore in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The TMC has decided to not field a few sitting MPs and introduce some new faces instead. Hence, the candidate list, announced by Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday, included former cricketers Pathan and Kirti Azad.

Pathan announced his retirement from all formats of cricket in 2021. He was known for his hard-hitting style of batting and his ability as a spinner. He played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is for India between 2007 and 2012. He was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team as well as the squad that brought home the 2011 ODI World Cup.

Yusuf Pathan will be contesting Behrampore, while Kirti Aazd will contest from Bardhaman-Durgapur.

Pathan has been fielded from Behrampore against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. During the 2019 General Elections, Chowdhury won the Berhampore seat with a margin of 80,000 votes despite the party’s struggle to stay relevant in Bengal amidst a saffron surge.

From the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, where Sandeshkhali is situated, TMC pitted its former MP Haji Nurul Islam by dropping sitting MP Nusrat Jahan. TMC has renominated Mahua Moitra from the Krishnanagar seat for the second consecutive term despite her expulsion from Lok Sabha.

The party announced its list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. At a mega rally held at Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that the party will contest all 42 seats in the state alone.
