Constituency overview
Valsad constituency, with a dominant tribal population, lies in the bordering district of Gujarat and Maharashtra. It has seven Assembly seats – Dang, Vansda, Dharampur, Valsad, Pardi, Umargam and Kaprada. Except Vansda, all other Assembly seats are with the BJP.
Congress MLA from Vansda, Anant Patel, is contesting from the Valsad Lok Sabha seat this time. Valsad, home to a vast migrant population, has industries located in Vapi, Umargam and Sarigam. Congress’ Nanubhai Patel was the Valsad MP for three terms from 1957 to 1971. He was again elected as MP in 1977 as a Janta Party candidate.
While Congress’ Uttam Patel won the seat in 1980, 1984 and 1991, Janta Dal’s Arjun Patel got elected in 1989. BJP’s Manibhai Chaudhary won from Valsad in 1996, 1998 and 1999, followed by Congress candidate Kishan Patel in 2004 and 2009. Dr K C Patel won the seat in 2014 and 2019 elections.

A woman lawyer had filed a police complaint accusing Patel of rape in New Delhi in 2017. Patel also filed a complaint with the Delhi Police, alleging that the woman had demanded Rs 5 crore from him, after he was drugged and filmed in a compromising state. The woman was later arrested.
