Chennai Central Lok Sabha constituency: One of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Chennai Central is known as the stronghold seat of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party.
The current sitting MP of this constituency is Dayanidhi Maran, who won the 2019 general election and will be contesting against Vinoj P. Selvam of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, scheduled on April 19 in the single phase.
Voting will commence at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., with an additional hour provided as a buffer period for voters who are already present in the voting line.
Former Union Telecom Minister and the current sitting MP of Chennai Central, Dayanidhi Mara, representing the DMK party, has been a three-time Member of Parliament from the same constituency in the 2004, 2009, and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Looking back at the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Maran contested from Chennai Central and secured a victory with a significant margin of 57.15% against S. R. Sam Paul of the PMK party. However, he faced defeat in 2014 by Mohamad Ali Jinnah of the AIADMK party with a margin of 5.87%.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Dayanidhi Maran is contesting for re-election to retain his seat, competing against Vinoj P. Selvam from the BJP.
Vinoj P. Selvam, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently holds the position of State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Tamil Nadu.
In the 2021 assembly elections, Selvam emerged as the runner-up in a closely contested electoral battle in the Harbour Assembly constituency, where he secured 31.52% of the votes against DMK’s PK Sekhar Babu.
In the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Selvam is set to contest from Chennai Central against DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran, the current sitting MP of the constituency.
