In a bizarre incident, a man today repeatedly stabbed himself at Heathrow in front of horrified passengers with a knife he picked up from an airport store after going through the security checks.

The passenger, who is not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries, had passed through the airport’s security checks, and started cutting himself near the departure lounges in the west London airport’s Terminal 5 this evening.

Witnesses said the man stabbed himself in the head outside the Fortnum & Mason confectionery store, with an object he picked up after passing through passport, security and customs checks.

Horrified passengers are said to have tried to stop the man from inflicting further injuries on himself.

Airline employees disarmed the man before police, paramedics and airport security arrived. Heathrow spokesperson confirmed that “no other passengers were injured” in the incident and that there had not been a breach of security.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: “Police were called to a shop at Heathrow Terminal 5 to a report that a man had injured himself with a knife. Officers attended along with paramedics and the man was taken to a west London hospital with injuries which were not life-threatening.”

“A crime scene is in place while officers investigate. At this early stage no other person is being sought in connection with the incident,” he said.
