At least 84 people were killed and several injured as a gunman driving a heavy truck ploughed into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. French President Francois Hollande called it a terrorist act.
The attacker also opened fire before officers shot him dead. The 31-year-old Tunisian-born Frenchman was not on the watch list of French intelligence services, but was known to the police in connection with common crimes such as theft and violence.

French authorities were trying to determine on Friday whether the Tunisian had acted alone or with accomplices, but said the attack bore the hallmarks of Islamist militants.
