Simranjit Singh Sekhon, 35, was taken into custody on December 15 and booked on charges of raping an unconscious person. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that there may be other victims.
Sekhon is a California-based rideshare driver and a resident of Bakersfield, Fox News reported. Officials have not said which rideshare or cab service he was working for at the time of the alleged incident.
His immigration or visa status has not been disclosed by authorities.
According to investigators, the incident took place in the early hours of November 27. Sekhon allegedly picked up a 21-year-old woman from a bar in Thousand Oaks around 1.00 am to drive her to Camarillo.
Police said the woman was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for herself. During the journey, she reportedly fell asleep in the vehicle.
Although the trip was marked as completed, investigators allege Sekhon continued driving around Camarillo with the unconscious passenger and sexually assaulted her, Fox News reported, citing law enforcement officials.
Sekhon was arrested following an investigation by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit. He has been charged with the rape of an unconscious person.
Prosecutors cited the victim’s condition as a key factor in the case.
Court proceedings and bail Sekhon appeared in court for his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty, according to Fox News. His bail has been set at $500,000. His next court hearing is scheduled for later this month.
Detectives believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. “The investigation remains active,” the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said, as quoted by Fox News.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the sheriff’s office.
The case has drawn attention to ongoing safety concerns linked to rideshare services in the United States, with police encouraging passengers and witnesses to report any misconduct.
