(File Photo) Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Moscow had received a peace proposal from the United States and that the plan put forward by US President Donald Trump could serve as a starting point for ending the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
Putin told senior officials in televised remarks that the US proposal “can be used as the basis for a final peaceful settlement,” according to Reuters. He said the plan had not yet been discussed “in any substantive way” with Russia.
He said Ukraine opposed the proposal and argued that Kyiv and European governments did not recognise that Russian forces were moving forward on the battlefield. “Russian forces will continue to advance unless there is peace,” he said, as quoted by Reuters.
Putin also said the Americans had asked Moscow to “make certain compromises and show flexibility” during discussions held before talks in Alaska. He added that Russia had agreed to those terms, despite what he described as “complex issues” for Moscow.
He said Washington had since presented what he called a “new, modernised version” of the peace plan, now made up of 28 points. “We have its text,” Putin said, adding that this updated version “can also form the basis for a final peace settlement.”
