The Pentagon announced Monday that the US is sending additional troops to the Middle East as violence intensifies between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon, raising concerns about a potential regional conflict, reported AP. While Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder did not disclose the number of troops or their specific missions, the US currently maintains about 40,000 military personnel in the region.
This decision follows a series of significant Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of casualties. As Israel prepares for further military operations, the US State Department has issued warnings urging American citizens to leave Lebanon due to the increasing risk of conflict.
“Given the unpredictable nature of the ongoing conflict and recent explosions throughout Lebanon, including in Beirut, the US Embassy strongly advises American citizens to depart while commercial travel options are still available,” the State Department stated on Saturday. The developments reflect a growing urgency to ensure the safety of US nationals amid escalating tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, Israel executed a large-scale military operation on Monday, involving hundreds of airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, leading to more than 270 reported fatalities and over 1,000 injuries, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. The Israeli military claimed it targeted more than 800 sites associated with the Hezbollah militant group, which it accused of stockpiling weapons in residential areas. As a precaution, the military urged local residents to evacuate these locations immediately.
