The US Senate has moved to end the federal government shutdown that has been continuing for the last 40 days and a bipartisan Senate deal has been reached to fund the government through January 30. Senators are expecting a Sunday night vote on advancing a House-passed bill which will be amended to combine the short-term funding measure, Reuters reported.

A Reuters report, quoting sources, stated that there were at least eight votes from the Senate Democratic Caucus in favour of a negotiated deal to end the historic shutdown that began on October 1. The deal would include a reversal of President Trump’s order to fire federal employees and provisions to prevent any such measure in the future. The deal would also ensure that food stamps remain funded through the financial year 2026, CNN reported.

The amended bill would still be required to be passed by the House of Representatives and then sent to President Trump for his signature, a process that could still take a few days even if the Senate passes the bill.

The Senate Democrats have till now resisted all the efforts made by the GOP to pass a funding measure and aimed to pressure Trump-led Republicans to agree to fix healthcare, including extending expiring subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. The Senators, under the deal being discussed, would vote later on the subsidies.

President Trump, interacting with reporters earlier, had said that it looks like the government shutdown is “getting close” to ending as a potential deal has been reached in the Senate to end the federal shutdown. “It looks like we’re getting close to the shutdown ending, you’ll know very soon,” the president said.

Sunday marked the 40th day of shutdown which has affected US airlines at 40 of the major airports due to shortages of air traffic controllers, federal workers have been sidelined affecting food aids, park and travels. The busy Thanksgiving holiday season is threatened to be disrupted due to flights delays and cancellations.
