The Dera Bassi police Wednesday injured two members of the Goldy Dhillon gang during an exchange of fire near the Ghaggar bridge.
The injured were identified as Aman Kumar of Khijrgarh, Zirakpur, and Sharanjit Singh, alias, Sunny of Motemajra (Mohali), currently residing in Tangori.
According to SSP Harmandeep Hans, the incident unfolded when the suspects tried to evade a police checkpoint. “They diverted their motorcycle under the Ghaggar bridge and fired three rounds at the police team. In retaliation, officers fired four to five rounds, injuring both accused,” he said.
The police recovered two .32 bore pistols, around 10 live cartridges, a Bajaj Discover motorcycle, and other incriminating material from the spot.
“Both gangsters already face multiple cases under the Arms Act at Mohali and Sohana police stations,” the SSP added.
The Goldy Dhillon gang, closely linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate, has been on the police radar for a string of extortion and firing incidents across Punjab.
“Preliminary investigation indicates the duo was planning a major extortion or contract killing. Swift police action averted a serious crime,” said SSP Hans.
The operation was jointly led by DSP Vikram Brar, SHO Sumit Maur, and the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF). A massive manhunt was launched to trace other gang members, and a statewide crackdown is underway.
Sharing further operational details, SSP Hans, accompanied by SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh, said that acting on credible intelligence, joint teams of AGTF and SAS Nagar police intercepted the suspects. “The accused opened fire at the police during the chase but were neutralised in retaliatory fire,” he said.
A case was registered under sections 109, 132, 221, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Dera Bassi police station.
Linked to Zirakpur firing case
SSP Hans said that the encounter is connected to a recent firing incident in Mohali Phase 7, allegedly executed under the Kala Rana gang, part of the Lawrence Bishnoi network. “Inputs from that case led us to intercept today’s suspects,” he said, adding that the duo had been instructed by Goldy Dhillon to target a businessman in Punjab.
