The United States Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has advised American citizens to avoid visiting US government buildings in the country, following reported threats linked to growing regional tensions with Venezuela, The Associated Press (AP) reported on Saturday.

The warning comes days after US military strikes in Caribbean waters targeted suspected drug traffickers, leading to several deaths and the disappearance of two fishermen from Trinidad, believed to have been killed in one of the attacks.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, told AP that the alert “is based on threats directed at American citizens in the Caribbean nation” and that it “could be linked to the ongoing tensions in the region.”

He said local security forces have stepped up measures to respond to any potential incidents but declined to give further details.

Six strikes carried out by US forces since early September have killed at least 28 people. Alexander said the situation was discussed in a recent briefing between US and Trinidadian authorities.

Following the most recent attack, US officials said survivors were taken into custody after the military hit a suspected drug-carrying vessel.

Trump’s administration has maintained that suspected drug traffickers are “unlawful combatants” who can be targeted with military force, AP reported.
