The UK government is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh following recent attacks on the Hindu minority and the arrest of religious leaders. Members of Parliament raised concerns during an urgent discussion in the House of Commons, highlighting the plight of the Hindu community amidst escalating violence.

Labour MP Barry Gardiner initiated the debate on Monday, with Catherine West, the UK Foreign Office Minister for the Indo-Pacific, assuring Parliament of continued diplomatic efforts. She mentioned receiving commitments from Bangladesh’s interim government during her visit last month to provide support for minorities.

West emphasized the UK’s proactive stance, including discussions with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, and reiterated that the UK would advocate for religious freedom in Bangladesh.

“We are aware of the Indian government’s concerns over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office is monitoring the developments closely,” she said.

The unrest stems from political instability since August 5, when deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India. The situation worsened following the arrest of Das, a prominent Hindu leader. Widespread protests and attacks targeting the Hindu community, including vandalism of homes and businesses, have intensified since Muhammad Yunus took charge as Chief Adviser of the interim government in August.

MPs across parties expressed grave concern. Shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel described the violence as “deeply concerning,” while Bob Blackman, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Hindus, condemned the attacks as an “attempt at ethnic cleansing.” Blackman highlighted reports of priests being arrested and monks denied entry into Bangladesh.

British Sikh Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan also voiced solidarity, noting that all communities are appalled by the persecution. He urged Minister West to engage more closely with the UK’s Hindu and Bangladeshi communities on this issue.
