A gunman killed two people at an Israeli-run border crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan on Thursday. The attack happened at the Allenby Crossing, the Jordan River, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, the only gateway for Palestinians from the Israeli-occupied West Bank to Jordan.

Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said that two men, around 60 and 20 years old, were killed. The military said, without elaborating, that the attacker had been “neutralised”.

According to the Israeli military, the attacker arrived at the crossing on a Jordanian truck transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Israeli media, citing military sources, reported that the assailant, who was driving the truck, opened fire with a handgun at people at the crossing before the vehicle was inspected by authorities. He got out of the truck, after his gun jammed, and stabbed the two victims.

Security guards at the crossing opened fire on the assailant, killing him.

Jordan responds to attack

Responding to the incident, Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said authorities in Jordan are monitoring the developments and more details will be announced once they become available.

Three Israelis were killed in a September 2024 attack at the crossing, when a retired Jordanian soldier opened fire.

Israel captured the West Bank, along with Gaza and east Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories for a future state.

Why Allenby Crossing is crucial

The Times of Israel, citing Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, reported that since the beginning of the war in October 2023, nearly 10,000 trucks, or over 144,000 tonnes, of aid have been transferred to the Gaza Strip from Jordan using land crossings with Israel and the West Bank. The total represents some 7 per cent of all aid deliveries.
