At least four people have been killed and dozens were injured in the earthquake.
Over the decades, several tremors have rocked Taiwan, which lies along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, the line of seismic faults encircling the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.
Here’s a look at few of the deadliest earthquakes that have hit Taiwan in recent times:
2016 Yujing
In 2016, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Yujing led to a tragic incident where a 17-story apartment complex collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 114 people.
1999 Chi-Chi
The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck central Taiwan in the Chi-Chi area, resulting in the loss of nearly 2,500 lives. This seismic event also left thousands injured and caused destruction of homes and buildings. It is one of Taiwan’s worst-recorded quakes.
1941 Tainan
Measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, the quake which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths.
1935 Shinchiku-Taichū
This 7.1 magnitude quake was Taiwan’s deadliest, claiming 3,200 lives. Around 12,000 people were injured and at least 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.
