(Pool Photo via AP)In a television broadcast on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the war in Ukraine and European defence and emphasized that Russian aggression “knows no borders” and it won’t stop at Ukraine while warning Europe that it must prepare its military capabilities, in case the US steps away from the European side.
“I want to believe the US will stay by our side, but we have to be ready if that isn’t the case,” Macron said during the address.
Macron questioned whether Vladimir Putin led Russia would stop after its invasion of Ukraine, considering the fact that the Kremlin continues to rearm itself more than ever. The speech by Macron comes ahead of an extraordinary summit between European leaders in Brussels on Thursday.
During the prime time address on TV, Macron said “I’m speaking to you tonight because of the international situation and its consequences for Europe…I know you are legitimately worried when faced with the historic events that are shaking the world order.”
Macron’s office said that he sought to calm the voter anxiety due to several issues like Russia-Ukraine war, trade war amid US’ retaliatory tariffs, Trump pausing US support to Ukraine among others.
Detailing about the recent shift of US policy towards the Ukraine in the three years long war, Macron said “The war in Ukraine, which has left almost one million dead and injured, continues with the same intensity. The US, our ally, has changed its position on this war, supporting Ukraine less and allowing doubt to linger on what will come next.”
Macron warned Europe to prepare its military capabilities accordingly as he suggests that the US won’t always be a reliable security partner. He further condemned Putin’s actions, accusing Russia of actively undermining European security and stability.
