Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Indian-American community at a major diaspora event in Long Island, New York, on September 22. This event, held at the 16,000-seat Nassau Coliseum, coincides with his visit to the US for the high-level UN General Assembly session. Modi is also scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the UN, reported PTI.

Reports suggest that preparations for the Long Island event are in full swing. The community event marks a decade since Modi last addressed a massive gathering at Madison Square Garden in September 2014, shortly after taking office as Prime Minister. In 2019, Modi participated in the ‘Howdy Modi’ event at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where he was joined by then-US President Donald Trump.

This year’s visit comes shortly before the US presidential elections on November 5, which will see a race between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, the first woman of Black and Indian heritage to be US Vice President and a major party’s presidential nominee.

The UN General Debate for the 79th session will run from September 24-30. Modi is expected to address the session in the afternoon of September 26. The provisional speaker list is subject to change as the UN updates it leading up to the event.

The General Debate will start with Brazil on September 24, followed by US President Joe Biden, who will deliver his final address from the UN podium before the US presidential election.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the debate, and the President of the 79th session of the General Assembly will also speak. Guterres is hosting the Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters on September 22-23, focusing on adopting the Pact for the Future, including a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

“The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future,” the UN said. “Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities,” PTI reported.
