Amid sweltering heatwave in Italy, hailstorms battered northern parts of the country earlier this week. Videos doing the rounds on social media showed a stream of icy water flowing through the streets of Seregno. Huge hailstones were seen pelting down over buildings, The Guardian reported.

At least 110 people were injured after the hailstorm that hit the northern Italy on Wednesday. Several towns in the Lombary region were also affected.

According to Euro News, torrential rain, along with strong winds leading to hail and flash flooding, wreaked havoc northern Italy on Friday, prompting the Governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, to declare a state of emergency.

The region received more than 500 calls for help owing to damage to property and injuries.

“The wave of bad weather, after having impacted our mountain regions, has now also hit the plains, causing injury to some people,” CNN quoted Zaia as saying. Hailstones were of 10 cm diameter in size, she said, adding that most of the injuries were caused by broken glass and people slipping on the hailstones.

Sky24 reported that a 53-year-old man riding his bicycle died when his wife, who followed him with their car, ran over him during the storm.

Meanwhile, the Italian Meteorological Society named the latest heat wave ‘Cerberus’. ‘Cereberus’ is coined after the three-headed monster featured in Dante’s Inferno as a guard to the gates of hell. “The earth has a high fever and Italy is feeling it firsthand,” Luca Mercalli, the head of the Italian Meteorological Society, was quoted as saying by CNN.

Reuters reported that heat-related emergencies spiked in Italian hospitals amid the heat wave. Italian cities including the capital Rome have recorded abysmally high temperatures for days.
